A Bed Of Roses (well, Almost)

For many, the bedroom is not only the place for sleeping

, dressing and grooming; it is also the setting for romance and passion. Not every bedroom is a sensual love-nest all the time - we all get sick, exhausted or not in the mood from time to time, and sometimes doing more than the basics seems more than it's worth. But for a special occasion, it's worth pulling out the stops and transforming the place where we spend a third of our day (or should) into a haven of romantic, erotic and sensual delight.

Naturally, the first step is to give the room a basic clean. Vacuum, tidy, dust, put away any clothes lying around, empty the rubbish bin and remove any dirty clothes to the laundry ready to be washed. Remove the sheets and pillow cases ready to replace them with new ones. If you have used a feather duster to do a little cleaning, don't put this away. It has other uses...

Begin with the bed. Crisp clean sheets (or soft, fluffy clean sheets) are pleasant to the skin. Satin sheets look luxurious and sensual but they have their disadvantages, namely that they are chilly on a cold night and satin-on-satin has very little friction, so once you have fallen asleep (or even before), the blankets can very easily slip off the side of the bed and leave you even cold. Cotton or flannelette is a better material choice for sheets, but the colour is up to you (red and crimson are considered the most effective for setting a mood of passion).

Before you put them on the bed, however, sprinkle a little scented talcum powder over the top of the mattress to delicately scent the bed. Don't use essential oils, as lovely and effective these are for creating a mood, as these can stain the sheets and the mattress. They are particularly unadvised if you have an electric blanket beneath the sheets. Also add a little talcum or perfume inside the pillowcases. You could also try sprinkling dried spices under the bottom sheet or inside the pillowcases, but make sure that they are ground rather than whole or they will be lumpy and uncomfortable. Making sure that the pillowcases match the sheets and the duvet or bedspread is a nice touch, but is not essential, as long as all the pillowcases match or complement each other.

Don't overdo the perfumes, even if they all match. While it may seem like a superbly sensuous idea to fill the room with incense, pot-pourri, scented candles, aromatherapy burners and a scented bed, this can backfire on you badly and create a stifling atmosphere that leaves you gasping for fresh air. Apparently, the Empress Josephine learned this one the hard way when she doused her wallpaper with musk ready to welcome Napoleon home - and gave him a headache ("Not tonight, Josephine.")

Make sure that you have plenty of pillows, as these give a very voluptuous and luxurious look to a bed, as well as being... practical. Decorative cushions are another nice touch and can give an Arabian Nights harem touch to the bedroom when used in quantity.

A mink or plush throw or coverlet to the bed is also a nice, sensuous touch, as can sheepskins or fake furs draped across or around.

While the idea of strewing a bed with rosepetals or other flowers is very romantic (and popular), in reality, scattered petals from a real rose crumple, wither and leave you with lots of little bits in the sheets that are nearly as bad as having biscuit crumbs in the bed. Instead, try fabric petals cut or pulled off an artificial flower - some shops and online outlets sell these especially for creating a romantic bedroom, often along with other accessories such as candles or massage equipment (this sort of "romance kit" would make a great hen party gift). If you want to use fresh flowers, then placing a single bloom amidst the pillows is a much better touch.

Complete the setting with plenty of candles and soft music of your choice playing gently. If you have an electric blanket, turn it onto low. Also make sure that the room is a comfortable temperature - there is a reason why low temperatures are a metaphor for lack of passion. Do not forget to do a bit of floor cleaning as well, remove the unnecessary things so that the candles are the only ones on the floor.

Anything else? Well, that's entirely up to your imagination...
