A Beginner's Guide to Improving Your Bowling

Despite how simple the game looks, the first time you try bowling

, you might not do very well as it's a bit more difficult than it looks. The concept of the game is quite simple: you roll your ball down the lane and try to knock over as many pins as you can to get the highest score. You're given two tries to knock down as many pins as you can. Everyone can bowl. Instinctively the majority of new players understand what they need to do the first time they play. Of course, what most new players struggle with is learning some techniques that can raise a good score into a great score.

It's important that, when you go bowling, you need to use the right ball. You don't need to take your own ball, though, as most bowling alleys will have plenty of bowling balls available to use. You can take a little time to try different balls out. See if you can find a ball that isn't too light or too heavy for you to use. Your fingers and thumb should fit comfortably in the holes on the ball. The holes shouldn't be too tight or too lose, or you risk reducing your control over the ball. You can use a little textured tape for your thumb hold if you need to improve your grip a more. Lift and try each ball you think might be good for you until you find the one that is right.

Using your own footwear is a good idea. Bowling alleys usually rent shoes to players, but they are only really used by casual bowlers. However, if you intend to spend quite a bit of time bowling then you should really consider getting your own shoes. Having your own shoes will ensure that your feet are comfortable and that you have the right arch support during the game. Your bowling will suffer if you are distracted by painful shoes. Taking some time to get your shoes ready is a good idea as well; just use a wire brush on the toes and heels. You won't slide as much while you are playing as your shoes will have more traction.

Most new players won't hit all the pins on the first try, but you do get a second shot to knock over the ones you missed. The easiest way to make sure that you get your spare pins knocked down is to aim your body away from the pins a little. Wherever your spare pins are, aim slightly to either the left or right of them. This is great for players who might unintentionally curve their throws. However, if you know you're good with throwing in a straight line, stand a few inches on the opposite side of the center arrow as you aim right at the spare pins you need to hit. By standing on the opposite side of the center line, you can avoid your ball rolling into the gutter.

Make careful study of every aspect of their game, from their grip to how they release the ball. Study their strides and stances. This habit will, over time, improve your bowling game, as you learn what works best for you.
