A Biography About Bill Gates

William Henry Gates III commonly known as Bill is the reason why most computers these days work

. He is the co-founder of Microsoft and is worlds second richest man. He would be the worlds richest man but over his life time he has donated $28 Billion to charities. His life is one that interests many as they want to know what influenced the man to make computers what they are today.

Gates was born in Seattle on the 28th October 1955 to his parents William Henry Gates Sr and Mary Maxwell Gates. While Bill was young his parents had devised a career in law for him as his Father was a prominent Lawyer but obviously this did not go to plan. When he was 13 he attended Lakeside School where he was known for being a bright student. Whilst in the 8th grade the mother club brought a computer for the students to use and this is when Gates began to shine in the computer world. He programmed the computer with BASIC and was regularly excused from his maths lessons to do this to the computer. He also developed a game of Tic Tac Toe on this computer which the student really enjoyed playing. After this computer was exhausted he moved onto a PDP-10 computer which was owned by the Computer Centre Corporation (CCC).

After Gates and his friends were using these computers they were eventually banned after it emerged that they were exploiting bugs in the system so they could have more time on the computer. One of the friends that was banned alongside Gates was his future business partner Paul Allen. After the ban finished the group offered to find bugs in the system in exchange for computer time which the CCC accepted and they carried on with this. Gates did not use the computer but he opted to study various coding to expand his knowledge.

In 1973 he graduated from Lakeside with a score of 1590 out of 1600 and from this he enrolled at Harvard where he met Steve Ballmer who became the CEO of Microsoft after Bill gates left. While studying at Harvard Gates did not have a set study plan as he spent most of his time using the colleges computers. Gates was still in contact with Paul Allen and following the release of MITS Altair 8800 they both saw the opportunity to start their own computer software company. At this time Gates dropped out of Harvard so he and Allen could start their company. This company was called Microsoft.

Microsoft was formed in Albuquerque as part of the deal that Gates and Allen made with MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems). This deal was that Gates and Allen would right software for their new microcomputer after they managed to gauge their interest from a phone call. Allen was hired by the company and Gates was hired shortly after.

The software that they developed was called BASIC and this formed very popular with hobbyists who found a leaked version of the software and began copying it. When Gates discovered that people were copying it he wrote an open letter saying they could not continue to develop it without payment and this angered many hobbyists. In 1976 Microsoft became independent from MITS and they began distributing software.

Over the first 5 years of the company Microsoft employees generally too the responsibility of running the business but Gates often wrote code and he personally checked every single line of code that was distributed and rewrote it when needed.

In 1980 IBM approached Microsoft asking them to develop and operating system (OS) for their computers and they took up this offer. Microsofts OS proved extremely popular and was distributed under IBMs name. They were automatically installed on IBM computers and this helped increase sales for IBM. People soon caught on that the OS was designed by Microsoft with one magazine calling Gates The Man Behind the Machine.

After this news came out Microsoft began developing its own OS that would be distributed under its own name and it was released in 1985 and was called Windows. As Microsoft began to develop more OS the United States government took Microsoft and Gates to court over anti-competitive behaviour in the market. This angered Gates who answered many questions with, I do not Recall.

Microsoft carried on developing its products and releasing its updated OS up to what we have today, Windows 7. But in 2006 he stepped out of the day-to-day running of Microsoft but he remained as chairman. He wanted to step into other ventures including charity work with his wife Melinda. He founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which focuses on helping people in poverty in Africa. He I also the chairman or Corbis which is a digital image service but he now focuses on enjoying life and working less.
