A Brief History Of Hawaii

Many people are aware that Hawaii is a beautiful and rich place

. Lots of people dream of vacationing or honeymooning in Hawaii because of its rich culture, beautiful volcanoes, and gorgeous beaches. What about the history of Hawaii? How did it get to be the beautiful place that it is today?

The Polynesians were the first people to settle in Hawaii anywhere from 300 to 700 A.D. They came across the Pacific in boats and found their way by navigating along the stars. They brought with them some of the foods that a famous in Hawaii today, such as, sugar cane, coconut, and bananas. There is a separate belief that Polynesians came from the Marquesas Islands, and then a second group of settlers came later from Tahiti.

In 1778, Captain James Cook came to the Hawaiian Islands and dubbed them Sandwich Islands named after the Earl of Sandwich. Cook described the natives surfing, and this is the first record people have of the surfing that is so popular in Hawaii even today. In 1779, Cook was killed in Hawaii over a dispute.

In the 1800's, Hawaii was introduced to pineapples. After this time, pineapple and sugar cane plantations became a major source of wealth for Hawaiians. In 1900, Hawaii became a U.S. territory. In 1959, Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state. Over the years many Asians came to Hawaii from China, Japan, and other Asian countries. The diversity of all the different people who visited or settled in Hawaii makes it a unique place to visit.

Not only is Hawaii richly diverse in culture, but it is also diverse in geography. Made up of six major islands, it has many archipelagoes, which means it has many different shores and beaches that tourists can visit. When you visit the beaches, you can take surfing, scuba diving, or snorkeling lessons. Hawaii is diverse in marine life, which includes coral reefs.

Hawaii is made up of volcanoes that are a result of tectonic plate disruption. There are two known active volcanoes in Hawaii on the Big Island and the island of Mauna Loa. Tourists can visit volcanoes and learn about how they are formed and how they have made up some of the rich landscape that is Hawaii. Kilaeua, the volcano on the big island has experienced steady eruption since 1983.

Hawaii is also rich in rainforests. Tourists can take hikes through some of these rainforests and experience the lush foliage and vast wildlife that lives in these areas. Along with mesic forests, there are also wet forests and bogs in Hawaii. Each has their own diverse look and wildlife that makes them unique. Measures have been taken to preserve this land from being developed.

Hawaii's history; politically, culturally, and geographically, make it a very unique place. Its location between the United States and Asia make up the diversity that encourages tourists to come and learn about the land. It has beautiful beaches, and it's full of romantic settings and opportunities to learn new things for people of any age.
