A Brief History Of The Nissan Cube

Nissan is a globally known brand name and the car maker has consistently manufactured several car models sold across the globe

. One such vehicle is the Nissan Cube which is a mini multipurpose vehicle and was first produced in the year 1998. It was initially sold in Japan but spread to Europe and the United States. Its popularity was largely attributed to its multipurpose function which enabled it to be used as both a personal and commercial vehicle. It has a lot of space in the back making it convenient for carrying light cargo. It also has a lot of headroom which allows reasonably big items to be fitted in it. The existence of this cube car can be divided into 3 main stages.

The first generation

This was the very first version of the Nissan Cube that we have on our streets today and was released in 1998. It had a lot in common with the Nissan Micra commonly known as the March and it had a similar engine and gearbox. It was considered to fall in between the Nissan Sunny and March in the production line. This cube car was initially sold in Japan alone but some individuals exported them to other areas.

The second generation

This version was released in the year 2002 and was more spacious than its predecessor. It came with 4 wheel drive as an option and also had a model which had seven seats and a lot more space. It had a 1.4 L engine but there was the option of going for the more powerful 1.5 L which was also used in the Nissan Tiida. Some other additional features were a sunroof, satellite navigation and a smart key which enabled one to get into the car without using the keys.

The third generation

This generation was unveiled in 2008 at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. It however went on sale in Japan first then later to other parts of the world. It had more rounded edges than previous models and more stylish rear bumper. This particular version was also backed by several different accessories which allowed for further customization of the Cube car after purchase. It had a range of engines to choose from, the most powerful being the 1.8 L. A choice of automatic or manual gear transmission is also available.

It hasnt always been smooth sailing for the Nissan Cube because in 2010, over 51,000 vehicles had to be recalled from the United States and Canada. The reason was a production glitch which led to fuel spills in the event of rear collisions which was very dangerous. The recall affected owners of the 2009 and 2010 models and especially those produced in 2009 between January and July. All later models were equipped with a safety protector which prevents any leaks in the event of a collision. Luckily, there were no reported fatalities and this was probably due to the speed at which Nissan reacted once the problem was reported.
