A Brief History Of The Remote Control Helicopters

The remote control helicopters took its first successful flight in 1968

, and were built by Dr. Dieter Schlute in West Germany. This first model was the first successful, fully functional and controllable remote control helicopters and was considered to be a groundbreaker in the field.

The first successful prototype of the remote control helicopters took initiative from the first ever-operational full-scale helicopter made in 1941 by Igor Sikorsky; and 10 years after its first successful flight, a semi-scale model was introduced to the mainstream in 1978. This introduction then led to the numerous variations of the helicopter kit that are now sold in every model, toy, and hobby shop worldwide.

Over the years, several basic designs for the helicopter have come to light. This includes those, which are endowed with collective pitches (blades that rotate longitudinally to vary or reverse the bodys lift), these models are known to be more difficult to fly but are more manoeuvrable aerodynamically speaking.

Giving remote control helicopters enough power to be able to lift itself off the ground has been a major development barrier in this field. However, with the advent of new technology, this particular hindrance has been overcome successfully and various ways of powering a remote control helicopters has come to light such as nitro fuel, gas turbines, batteries, petrol, and even gasoline.

As these little flying beauties developed through the years, each and every model succeeding the last has become significantly smaller and smaller. Nowadays, there are a large range of micro helicopters that are able to work both indoors and outdoors that may be able to fit on the palm of your hand. This is considered to be a very giant leap when compared to the first big and bulky helicopters that people started to play with.

Remote control helicopters are now available in virtually all high street, local, and online stores. Nowadays, they are no longer deemed to be suitable only to toy enthusiasts and hardcore hobbyists. Their general availability has made them accessible to the general public. Because of this, the helicopter needed added durability as noobs and novices took the controls for their flight. Toy helicopters today are now actually made of die cast plastics, which are known to have the ability to withstand accidental crashes into a wall or ceiling at certain speeds. Of course, this does not guarantee that they will be able to fly through unscathed.

One of the main developments to the helicopters in recent years is the addition of the gyroscope technology. This made the maneuvering of the helicopters easier and also eliminated the circling flying motion that is consistently seen in the cheaper models that are available in the market today. This particular technology also enables maneuvers to be more precise and easier making anyone playing to look like a pro within just minutes of flight. This also enables the helicopter to be in a stable and upright position whenever the control is eased off. Today, manufacturers are looking into improving stability, charge times, and other aspects of the helicopter.
