A Brief Introduction Into The World Of Social Media Optimisation

Social Media Optimisation otherwise known as SMO is the process of using aggregation

software to collect and filter content that is relevant to specific keywords across user generated media which includes social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace, forums, blogs, video sharing websites such as YouTube and micro media sites Such as Twitter.

It can also include on site activities such as replying to forum threads or blog posts if your website has these features embedded.

SMO differs from SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) whereby an increase in traffic is generated from networking websites rather than through search engines.

The obvious benefit of using SMO as a means to communicate to your audience is that no costs are involved apart from the manual work it takes to create content and respond to queries from users. It also allows for a more personal and creative approach when dealing with your customers as they can participate and respond directly with you which leads them to feel more involved and attached to the particular website you are promoting.

Another benefit is that it increases your link ability whereby end users will (depending on how interesting and stimulating the content is that you have created) recommend and pass on links friends and other users that in turn generate more backlinks to your website.

The added bonus is that it gives you a platform to listen to what your customers are saying about you and provides feedback on how well your other marketing activities are doing and how customers are responding to it.

There are several services that fall under SMO which are: Brand monitoring, online reputation monitoring which can also include political reputation and ethical reputation and word of mouth (or word of mouse as it is more commonly know online) marketing. Some of these services are designed to protect and monitor the reputation of the brand whilst others are used to spread new viral and marketing messages across social platforms.

Social Media Optimisation is one of the latest methods used to undertake Search Engine Marketing and although rising in popularity, it is still not used to its full extent with many companies and brands ignoring the benefits that this platform can offer.

Overtime a well planned campaign can greatly help to improve brand reputation, brand awareness, customer loyalty and customer relations but only if it is performed effectively and enough fresh content is created to keep end users engaged.
