A Brief Look At Lactose Intolerance And What It Means

Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest milk sugar

, or lactose, because you lack an enzyme called lactase. If you are lactose intolerant, eating dairy foods usually produces symptoms such as gas, bloating, abdominal cramps, diarrhea or nausea. There is no cure for lactose intolerance, but there are a number of products that can substitute for milk products in your diet.

Milk is used in many ways in the average diet; soups, sauces and baked goods often contain milk. For many children, milk is the most common beverage they drink. Luckily, there are a variety of milk substitutes on the market, and some can even be made at home. Rice and soy milk are two non-dairy products that can be found in most grocery stores. Both plain and flavored versions are available. These milk substitutes do not need to be refrigerated until after they are opened and can usually be used in place of cow's milk in most recipes. Coconut milk and almond milk are two other options, although they may be less readily available at your grocery - you may need to find a health food store or order online. Both rice milk and almond milk can also be made at home.

Lactaid is the brand name of a line of dairy products to which lactase has been added. Lactase is the enzyme your body needs to break down lactose, or milk sugar. Lactaid products are essentially the same as regular dairy products from a nutritional standpoint and may also be used for cooking. Many people who are lactose intolerant are able to eat or drink Lactaid products. In addition, Lactaid makes lactose supplements - as do other manufacturers - which you can take when you eat or drink regular milk products. Another brand of supplement, Dairy Care, contains beneficial bacteria called lactobacillus acidophilus. These beneficial bacteria break down the lactose in regular milk and may allow lactose-intolerant people to use regular milk without developing symptoms. Dairy Care is taken once a day, in contrast to some supplements that must be taken with the meal that contains a dairy product. Lactaid and Dairy Care can be found in health food stores and some pharmacies.

Some manufacturers add lactobacillus bacteria to regular milk. Lactobacillus bacteria are also called probiotics. These healthy bacteria occur normally in your body and are also found in fermented dairy products such as kefir and yogurt. Even people with lactose intolerance are often able to eat or drink fermented dairy products as the fermentation process removes much of the milk sugars. If you still react to these regular dairy products, however, there are versions made with substitutes such as soy milk.

In addition to milk substitutes, there are a number of other food products available for someone who has difficulty digesting lactose. Soy cheese is an alternative cheese product. Yogurt can be made with soy or rice milk. Goat's milk is available in many health food stores and some grocery stores. It can be used for any food product or recipe normally made with cow's milk, and some people are able to digest goat's milk even if they are lactose intolerant.
