The term Taiwanese is but one name for a language that is widely spoken in Taiwan and in mainland China

. This is a language that is also a dialect that is widely spoken in South China and it is even spoken in countries of southeastern Asia. The language itself is called by a number of names and if you do not comprehend what each name refers to, you could forgive yourself for the confusion. Most people are also easily confused by these names as well. This is due to the fact that there are many language variations in terms of its character as well as the region where it is spoken.

Taiwanese is spoken in Taiwan and in south and north as well as rural and urban Taiwan. It is also spoken in China and in Southeast Asia and though it comprises a number of dialects it is linguistically still one language. Many of its names are ethnically oriented and include names such as Southern Min and Hokkien.

Southern Min, in particular, is a translation of the Mandarin term Min3 nan2 hua4/yu3. In fact, this is a term that refers to geographical regions and more particularly to the south of Fujian. The word Min refers to Min3 which is Chinese and especially related to the Fujian province.

Those who can speak Southern Min will generally share common ancestors who are related through blood as well as cultural ties and who are also from south Fujian cities such as Amoy, Zhangzhou as well as Quanzhou. Though the language is quite old, it continues to be spoken today in these and other cities in Taiwan.


Taiwanese is also a translation of Tai2 yu3 which is a word that dates to around the time when the Japanese ruled this part of the world. The period when the Japanese ruled began around the year 1895 and ended around the year 1945. Furthermore, this name is originally from Taiwan and is considered a geographical name that was coined by native people of Taiwan.

Taipei, Taiwan is located in the north of Taiwan and is the largest city in the country and also the capital of Taiwan.
