A Brief Overview Of The Accor Hotel Group

If you have ever made hotel reservations through any of the top hotel booking sites

the chances are you would have at some point booked a room at a property owned by The Accor Hotel Group.

A French organisation which is headquartered in Paris, the Accor Group operates in over 90 countries and five major continents around the world. With a portfolio of over 4400 hotels, which it either owns, manages or franchises, it is comfortably one of the biggest players in the hospitality industry, turning over a mind boggling 6.1 billion euros in 2011 alone.

Launched by Paul Dubrule and Grard Plisson in 1967, who quit their jobs at major computer firms in the USA to form the SIEH (Socit d'investissement et d'exploitation hteliers) hotel group, the company have come a long way since it opened its first Novotel hotel in the outskirts of Lille in the north of France. Initially basing their business model on the success of hotels, motels and lodgings in the USA which operated in suburban areas and along major highways they initially focused on developing a portfolio of properties at the budget and economy end of the scale. However as the business grew, and the important of location became more pertinent, so their focus shifted to include representation at the luxury end of the scale too.

Nowadays Accor Hospitality is associated with some of the most cherished and popular hotel brands in the world. These include Etap Hotel, Formule1 and Ibis at the budget and economy end of the scale (which incorporates well over half the total number of all their properties), Suite Novotel, Mercure and Adagio in the midscale range and Sofitel, MGallery, Sebel, Grand Mercure, Pullman and Mei Jue at the luxury end of the scale. Up until recently they used to own more brands too. Infact only last month the company confirmed they had formalised the sale of its US budget hotel division, which included Motel 6 and Studio 6, to the Blackstone investment fund for 1.5 billion euros. A move which saw them reduce their net debt by 780 million euros.

An organisation which is committed to open new frontiers in hospitality some of the most famous Accor Group Hotels include the Hotel Sofitel Rio de Janeiro, the Mercure Paris Montmartre Sacre Coeur and the Hotel MGallery Cour du Corbeau in Strasbourg. Infact the worlds leading hotel managers portfolio of hotels is so now so big that most hotel reservation websites would not be able to survive without their listings. Furthermore if their planned forthcoming expansion plans into Asia bears fruit the company good get bigger still.
