A Brief Review Of Online E-learning Software
The Correspondence course became even more popular after the second world war
, when many had missed large parts of their education. Without being able to complete courses, take examinations and gain qualifications, they were disadvantaged in the workplace. They often wanted a better job, and so turned to something called 'The Correspondence Course'. These were fairly successful because the learning was carried out in a home environment. There would be face to face help and discussions about the 'course work' both at home and in the workplace, because 'everyone wanted to help each other'. Students worked methodically through their course material, ensuring they were well prepared for an exam they could not afford to fail.
As the number of correspondence courses increased, so did the number of certificates and qualifications offered. It became hard for an employer to judge the value of certain qualifications.
A solution was proposed by the UK Government, a wireless University, to be broadcast using the radio. However by the time the Open University came into existence (in the late 1960s), most homes had a television.
This form of distance learning was a success, and was also watched by students doing the same courses at other Universities, perhaps if they had missed a lecture or did not understand something.
In 2000, the UK Government decided to make an e-University using online distance learning. The teaching material be closely monitored and the project was expected to generate income from overseas. The project was a failure.
Why The Open University Learning Methods are Successful:-
1) Students were allocated a tutor in their local area where they could have real discussions and discuss any difficulties they were having. If they did not understand a concept then help was at hand.
2) They were a blend of proper lectures that were recorded in a television studio. After the introduction of the VCR around 1976, students also record lectures to watch when and where they wanted.
3) Each year students went to a Summer School at 'a real University'. This boosted morale and gave them the confidence, and they attended some real lectures.
4) The teaching was a mix of visual teaching from real lecturers, in addition, students had face to face interaction with their tutor; the teaching was a mix of visual teaching from real lectures - together with course material.
The e-University - a massive failure
New Labour launched the e-University, and the first online courses were launched in March 2003, a year later the whole project was scrapped at a cost to the UK taxpayer of GBP62 million.
Why Today's Software is More Suited to E-learning
A decade ago, software was extremely basic, and lacked the ability to have conference calls and video etc. They could not easily manage and organise large amounts of course material and data together with student records etc. The software was for a desktop computer which was often on a network, unlike todays software that can be accessed anywhere, because it is 'on the cloud'.

Due to the introduction of Content management Systems (CMS) websites with connected visuals, effectiveness of
e-learning software is increased, whilst at the same time cost is reduced. Many e-learning projects have failed, the successful ones, like the Open University demonstrated that learning is effective with a blend of recorded lectures and real time 'student / tutor' communications. In 2012, Smart TV, Connected TV, computers, tablets, iPads etc., enable e-learning to be as effective as the Open University.
