This summer, Continental Airlines will become the first major carrier to offer daily nonstop flights from the U.S. Mainland to Hilo, Hawaii in over 25 years. The airline announced there would be daily nonstop service between Los Angeles and Hilo, as well as weekly flights between San Francisco and Hilo. The Hawaii Tourism Authority predicts this will bring 40,000 more visitors to Big Island Hawaii hotels each year.

"Hilo has demonstrated its value as a premier visitor destination with nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival as featured attractions," said Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi. "We believe that once visitors discover Hilo, they will want to return again and again."
