One of the most essential things to have is a laundry basket. In my college days, I always found it better to have a vertical laundry basket, rather than one that lies on the ground. The vertical mesh baskets take up less space.

It goes without saying that any college student should have a good alarm clock handy. There are few feelings worse than waking up 15 minutes after an exam has started. These days a lot of kids like to rely on their cell phones for an alarm, but be extra safe by getting a loud alarm clock.

One good piece of advice I can give is to get several sets of bed linens. You never know what will happen on a rowdy night in college and you should always be prepared by having backup linens. During my time at school I saw it all. Interpret that as you see fit.

Another important thing to get in your dorm room is a good reading lamp. College students are known to have late nights studying, and if you happen to have a roommate, you will want to respect their sleeping habits. If you have a good desk lamp or reading lamp, you can get work done late at night.

It is always a good idea to have a TV present in the dorm room. In recent years, the prices of flat screen televisions have dropped dramatically, which is perfect for a dorm room. These televisions take up way less space than traditional tube televisions and are easier to transport.

Another nice touch to any college dorm room is a plant. If you are not responsible enough to water the plant, however, save yourself the effort and get a fake plant.
