A Chill In The Night : Film Of All Ages

A chill in the night (Play Misty for Me) is an American film directed by Clint Eastwood

, released in 1971. Its original title "Play Misty for Me" is more evocative than the French title. This is the first film in which Eastwood directed and played at a time.

Dave Garver is a radio announcer who every evening, when issued, passes the disc requested by one of the listeners. One evening, while he went into the bar he used to frequent, Dave made the acquaintance of one of his fervent admirers, Evelyn, who every evening, asked the same disk. Dave and Evelyn spent the night together.

Soon, however, Dave will realize the folly of Evelyn who is very possessive and violent, especially toward the former girlfriend of Dave that he seeks to regain.

Filmed partly in the ownership of actor / director, this atmospheric film, where a man was harassed by a woman completely unbalanced, unable to bear solitude, announcing a series of related works (especially the famous remake Fatal Attraction, Adrian Lyne, with Glenn Close and Michael Douglas, who resumed at the same psychology of the two characters) with the theme of the struggle of a man "innocent" against a "stalker" (persecutor ) female psychopath. Both stories are very similar: Evelyn, completely mad and uncontrollable, is going after the human environment and equipment Dave, who does not know how to cope. Assisted by Tobias, former girlfriend regained, it will make every effort to get rid of this fury that haunts him even in his daydreams. This first implement thriller shows a person to fight for its life against a powerful enemy, determined and ruthless, a lonely woman whose madness has increased tenfold force. Here is the man who is desperate.

Socially, we note the connotation of progressive film sexual liberation in the early 70s is at the center of the film - a flamboyant gay made an appearance brief but remarkable - and are emerging African American actors in key roles This is again in the early '70s in a movie "mixed", even though the Blaxploitation just beginning. The black characters are Al "Sweet" Monte, disk jockey colleague and friend Dave - Birdie the maid of Dave - and the audience and artists (including Johnny Otis, Cannonball Adderley and Joe Zawinul, founder of Weather Report ), the Monterey Jazz Festival in September 1970, filmed long and warmly by Eastwood, who is a well known jazzophile. By cons Hispanic culture is represented only by the names (Monterey, Caramel, Sausalito ...), the name of a restaurant, and the dish that serves "Albondigas (meatballs) .. .

Furthermore, the musical (created by Dee Barton, specialist music "thrillers", and will take up music in 1972 haunted "High Plains Drifter," Man High Plains) is significant, whether by the standards issued by Dave (especially the ballad "Misty" by Errol Garner or the "torch-song" The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face ("The first time I saw your face ") sung by Roberta Flack .

The theme of this languorous melody written by the composer "left-wing" Ewan MacColl serves as a background sound to a long shot evocation of the beauty of nature on the coast of California. The soothing views of a region that obviously loves Eastwood (he was elected mayor of Caramel in 1986) contrasts happily with frenetic scenes of violence reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho in 1960, Frenzy will be released in 1972 .. .).

Note, however, after playing in his seven previous films roles of "cowboy or soldier, also in 1971 (year of release" Play Misty for Me ") that will create the role of Eastwood" Dirty Harry (Dirty Harry Don Siegel), a character who operates in a socio-cultural, psychological and geographic poles apart from Dave's "Play Misty ...".

Don Siegel, who had also directed Eastwood in The Prey a year earlier (and who will lead in five films in total), holds a cameo role in "Play Misty ..." He is behind the counter of "Murphy's", the bar where Dave has his habits ...

Appointment to the Golden Globe for best actress in a dramatic role for Jessica Walter in 1972. It was Jane Fonda, who won for her role in Klute.
