A Close Encounter Of The Wild Kind In Bangalores Natural Sanctuary Bannerghatta National Park

If there is one destination that is a must-see for all naturalists on a tour of Bangalore

, it is undoubtedly the lush parklands of the Bannerghatta National Park. Located within 22km of the City Centre and occupying an expansive property sprawled across 25,000 acres, the wildlife sanctuary is a treasure trove full of Indias most endangered animals and a rich heritage of tropical flora and fauna.

Established in the late 70s, the attractions within the massive wildlife compound are as diverse as its inhabitants. With a butterfly park, crocodile farm and a serpentarium to its name, the park also encompasses a special region devoted to rescued animals.

Constructed in a region that contains mainly thick forest landscapes and shrubs, the Bannerghatta National Park is also home to one of the biggest collections of carnivorous animals in any of the states parklands. The highlight of a visit to the sanctuary is, of course, viewing these mesmerizing creatures. Visitors can do so by opting to take a Lion Safari (11km tour), Tiger safari (11km tour), or Grand Safari( 16km tour ) to experience close encounters with the parks big cats and plant-eating animals. Some of the venues most popular inhabitants include bears, white tigers, Bengali tigers, hyenas and lions while other inhabitants include cheetahs, panthers and leopards, all of whom are in danger of extinction within the subcontinent. The quarter devoted to Herbivores contains bisons, deer, monkeys and zebras, while porcupines, rhinoceros and majestic elephants are also found roaming the parkland. Elephant rides are also available in this section where chipmunks or American brown squirrels, who are rarely spotted in India, are also found.

The venues serpenntairum showcases varieties of snakes and amphibians in its enclave while the newly added Butterfly Conservatory in the butterfly park houses 20 species of the winged insects. Set within a specially built eco-system full of shrubs, plants and even a waterfall, the vibrantly coloured insects and moth species are also found in the informative exhibits that are displayed in this area.

The crocodile park is also a treat for guests who have an interest in the curious animals while those who wish to trek along the scenic routes laid out within the sanctuary can tackle the Hajjamana Kallu natural rock formation or venture down Mirza Hill (1.5 km long) and Uddigebande (3.5 km long) while admiring the multi-hued flora and fauna that line the walking trails.

A childrens corner is also part of the landscape while scrumptious snacks and local chaats are sold by vendors in stalls nearby. A canteen and a Chinese restaurant are also on hand to provide meals to visitors when an order is placed.
