A Closer Look At A Common Destroyer: Termites
The proliferation of pest control companies is a testament to the rise of the incidence of infestation of termites in houses and other premises. Notwithstanding the numerous professionals available to address the problem, the process remains complicated considering that this pest has species that are over 1800 in number. Also known as white ants, they belong to the family of insects designated as Isoptera. Many believe that they evolved from cockroaches that are common today. Nevertheless, they are considered to be part of the oldest living creatures today. Termites are also known as white ants. Similar to bees and ants, they actually live in colonies with population that ranges from several thousands to millions. The colonies operate under a well defined and structured order. The highest in rank are called the king and queen. They are responsible for the propagation of the species. Without them, this type of pest might have become extinct. The second is the workers. These are the real culprits for the weakening of wood and other structure. They are the actual eaters of wood. The last in the order are the soldiers. They are tasked to take responsibility for the order of the colony as well as the protection of the nest. These soldiers are sterile as well as blind. Moreover, their life span is between two to five years, which is a far cry from the life span of the king and queen, which is up to seventy years. In their colonies, termites construct a nest inside either the wood or in the soil. These nests are airtight. There is sufficient sealing for the nest to maintain high level of humidity. It is believed that less than of their population is destructive. Subterranean and drywood termites are generally considered as the destructive ones. Clear or white is the usual color of most of the species. Their bodies are soft, with antennas and six legs. The swarmer termites, on the other hand, have wings. Its colors are either black or dark brown. Knowing the physical characteristics of these pests is important because the same will be the basis of the determination of the damage that may be inflicted on the property. It will also be the basis of the manner by which one will be able to get rid of them. While having knowledge of termites is useful, the reality is that dealing with them is best left to the professionals. They have the necessary expertise to know what kind of termites are in place, and more importantly, what kind of methods to employ to eliminate them.
