Zaanse Schans is a town with an old world charm featuring many important sights in Dutch history and is quite an easy town to take a day trip in, being only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam proper. Getting there from Amsterdam is easy as you can just take a train going to Koog Zaandjik which takes one to the heart of the town, then its just a 10 minute hike going to Zaanse Schans, or one can also bike going there. The Museum Zaans is another must-visit as it encapsulates the history of the whole village from its factories to its local customs.
