A Couple Steps In Selecting A Flat Iron

Everyone remembers how important the curling iron was in the 80's; well that is how important the flat iron is today

. Most women won't even venture out the door until their hair is done perfectly, and they use a flat iron to do that. Different types of hair require different types of irons though. That is why it is important to understand the different types of flat irons as well as your own hair type to choose the right one.

When you have a head of thick or curly hair, you need something that is going to handle your hair. You need something with high temperatures and technology so that it straightens your hair without damaging it. You will want to choose an iron that has plates from one to two inches wide. One inch at least for an above the shoulders cut and 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide for shoulder length and below shoulder hair. You also want one with a temperature ranging from 380 degrees to 410 degrees in ceramic, titanium or tourmaline.

Hair that is average in thickness or a bit wavy is considered normal, but there is no "normal" when it comes to hair. This type of hair straightens easier than thick but still needs a good temperature ranging from 360 to 380 degrees for easy straightening. The plates for cuts above the shoulders only need to be a half inch to an inch wide. But hair longer than that should use one that is one to two inches wide. Like the ceramic plates, the material should be tourmaline, ceramic, or titanium also.

Thin hair is the lucky hair type, as this can use any size flat iron. The size of the plates isn't important with this kind of hair, but the temperature is. Thin and fine hair can be damaged easily when the temperature is too hot. It is recommended the finer the hair is, the cooler the temperature should be. Start with a cool setting and work your way up to a higher temperature for find the right setting for your hair. The temperature setting should always be below 360 degrees also.

To straighten hair safely, choosing the right plate material is important. The best materials are ceramic, titanium, and tourmaline. The popular choice among professions is ceramic. This produces an infrared heat that is gentle to the hair and seals it for shine. Titanium flattens the hair quickly and maintains a consistent heat level to prevent damage. And, tourmaline produces more negative ions than a ceramic one and creates even more shine when flattening the hair. All these types of plates are also better built and easier to use than cheaper models.

Temperature settings on an iron are essential in straightening the hair without damaging it. To find the right temperature for your hair type, you need to choose an iron with adjustable heat settings. Because fine hair needs low temperatures and thick need higher ones, it is important to be able to have control of the amount of heat the iron produces.

There are other factors that can sway your decision from one iron to another, like added features. For someone that always forgets to turn things off, choosing one that automatically shuts down after a certain period of time would be best. A person that is always running behind needs an iron that heats up quickly, some on the market heat up in a minute or less, which is perfect for those always late. Some are also portable or come with a warranty.

Your hair is important, you want it to look nice and you need to take care of it because it is the one thing you wear every day. There are a variety of cheap models out there claiming to work just as well, but the more expensive models are the safer bet. Just because they cost more doesn't mean they are not affordable though. However, if you are going to flatten your hair with a flat iron, then it is important that you use the best.
