A Curse To Beauty

Indian Mythology is full of anecdotes and stories that have special significance in the hearts and minds of people

. These stories, seemingly simple, provide profound insight into lessons that help demystify life. The characters in these stories and sequence of events are meant to be symbols of issues far more grave than they are shown to be. Lord Ganesha, plays the central role in many such stories that yield invaluable learning. The story behind his broken tusk is one such example.

One day Lord Ganesha was travelling happily through the world on his vehicle the rat. He had eaten lots and lots of Modaks (his favourite sweet, made up of rice flour, nuts, jaggery and coconut). His stomach was full and he was enjoying the ride. Suddenly the rat saw a snake and stumbled. Lord Ganesha toppled and fell flat on the ground. His stomach burst open and all the Modaks scattered around. Lord Ganesha gathered all the Modaks and stuffed them back into his stomach. In the gust of anger and frustration he caught the snake that caused his rat to stumble and tied it around his belly. Seeing this sight, the moon started laughing and made fun of lord Ganesha's big belly. The otherwise calm and cool Ganesha became furious and pulled out one of his tusks and threw it towards the moon with great force. Lord Ganesha cursed the moon and said that Your beauty is the cause of your arrogance and now your beauty will become the cause of your suffering. Whoever sees you on the fourth day of Bhaadrapada month , i.e. Ganesh Chaturthi (the birthday of lord Ganesha) would receive bad repute and accusations.

Listening to this curse the moon realized his mistake and begged for forgiveness. Lord Ganesha calmed down and told the moon that the curse cannot be taken back, but as you have realized your mistake those who are subjected to false accusations can be saved and can regain their good reputation if they see you on the second day of the bright fortnight. The moon was content after listening to this.

The moon that was proud of his appearance and laughed at Lord Ganesha just because of his big belly and his appearance also had to bow down to the Lord.

Lord Ganesha is the epitome of prosperity and wisdom. He is identified with his big belly, his vehicle the tiny rat and his broken tusk. The moral of this particular story is that outer beauty has to go away one day, what will stay with you is your inner beauty and your good character. Make sure you do not become egoistic just because of your appearance. Each person is special in his own way. People have their own strengths and weaknesses that may not be obvious when we first meet. This story beautifully summarizes the importance of mutual respect, inner beauty and love for all.
