A Day For Left Handers
Imagine a day for left handers where they unite and are recognized
. They get together and play sports and have tea parties. Restaurants and bars cater to left-handed people by serving drinks in special mugs and supplying the correct utensils. Well, as it turns out, there is a day for this! It is called National Left Handers Day and is celebrated on August 13 every year.
There is no denying that left handers need the same tools and items available to them that right handers already have. In the 1600s if someone was left handed they were believed to be a witch or warlock. As the centuries went on this obviously was exposed as an incorrect premise, but left handers did get the nickname "southpaws" that developed in the baseball leagues. Left-handed people are still sometimes the brunt of jokes, and there is a constant debate over whether left-handed or right-handed individuals are smarter or more coordinated. Studies have shown that left handers do, in fact, tend to perform better in sports and music and have better hand-eye coordination. The major difference separating them is that lefties have their own day.
With the population growing and more left handers being born, the need for equality for lefties has increased greatly. In the U.S. it is estimated that 9-15% of the population is left handed and that there are more males than females who are left-hand dominant. One popular saying among lefties is that everyone is born right handed but only the greatest overcome it. Zoologists also believe that all polar bears are left handed.
On Aug 13, 1976, the first International Left Handers day was celebrated, and it has since become an annual event. All over the world people get together that are proud to be left handed. Sports and musical instruments are played and bars and pubs serve beer out of left-handed mugs while bartenders use left-handed corkscrews to open up the bottles. The day has become more popular every year and still remains a hit in European countries. It is promoted all over the world through radio stations, news print and the media. It still remains a day that many do not know about, but if you are left handed then chances are you have heard of it.
Left handers are officially no longer "left" out. Not only do they have their own day to celebrate, but Tuesday of every week is considered the lucky day for a leftie. It has taken a few centuries for left-handed people to be recognized in a manner that they feel like they live in a left-handed world and not just a right-handed one. Companies now make products to help them out in all aspects of their life, and now for over 30 years there has been a day to celebrate them. Make sure that the next time August 13 rolls around that you acknowledge that it is left-handers day.
