A Day Trip To Sandwich Harbour, Walvis Bay

The Wild at Heart Safaris tour to Sandwich Harbour begins when you are collected at the Raft Restaurant near the Lagoon in Walvis Bay

. At 09:00 the tour starts officially. After a brief introduction by your guide, your adventure will start.

On the way to the shore of the Atlantic, with its crashing waves, you will pass Walvis Bay salt works, your guide will fill in the details about the weather system of the area and you will understand how the shore looks so windswept. Black Backed Jackal, Cape Fox and Pale Chanting Goshawks are among the small wildlife species that can be spotted here.

Once in the Namib Naukluft Park, you will head over several large salt pans, the Damara Tern can be found here, which is on the list of critically endangered species. The landscape changes very noticeably as you head south towards Sandwich Harbour. The wind sculpted sand dunes get progressively bigger until you reach Sandwich Harbour. Your guide will take you on a drive up to the top of the dunes, with safety very much in mind, you will experience some stunning views from the top. Standing atop these huge dunes while overlooking Sandwich Harbour is a very special feeling. White Pelicans will glide right by you, using the updraught created by the dunes, this is a memory that will stay with you.

A visit to the main Sandwich lagoon is possible if time permits, this body of water accommodates some 40000 birds of more than 34 species, and a short walk around the lagoon can give the opportunity to observe dolphins, seals and sometimes whales.

Lunch is another unforgettable memory. In the middle of this wilderness your guide will provide you with fresh bread, finger licking snacks of a wide variety and some chilled drinks. After lunch we drive back towards Walvis Bay on some more adventurous roads. In this area you might be able to see Springbuck or even Ostrich. Brown Hyena dens have also been spotted, so these lovely animals are present as well.

Driving through the Kuiseb Delta on our way back, your guide will enlighten you with tales about the Topnaar people of the Kuiseb. Descendants of the !Khoi, this local tribe utilises the !Nara fruit in several ways to sustain their livelihood and culture.

At around 1700hrs, you will be back where it started, and that is where the trip ends.
