A Dog Life Jacket Saves Dog's Lives
Each year more dogs than any of us care to envisage die in water
. The exact statistics remain un-quantified. A Google search for "dogs drowning in X last year", specifying any little village or large city in the U.S. or U.K. (or anywhere else in the world) into your search will bring up pages upon pages of results - newspaper clips, articles and other related media reports about specific incidences of some unfortunate dog drowning. One cause that all these cases have in common is that the dogs that drowned were not protected by a dog life vest and therefore could not keep afloat. Many of the dogs could swim but humans too who can swim also drown if they are not wearing a life jacket or thrown a buoyancy aid.
Sadly many people die in the action of trying to rescue their dogs from drowning, usually not suceeding in their well-intended but misguided attempt. It is normal for any animal loving human being to try to save a dog who is distressed in water, especially when that dog is part of their family and so you go in after the dog but would you do the same if you knew you had afforded your dog protection with a dog life jacket? Probably not - you would be better equipped to rescue your dog by other means, than risking your own life, such as getting on your mobile phone and calling out emergency rescue services or reeling your dog into safety with a hook on the dog life jacket grab handle.
It is a fact that most human potential drowning incidences are prevented by the effective use of a life jacket - the same is true in the case of dogs. The Google results reported dogs drowning in all sorts of conditions - surprisingly many of them in swimming pools (particularly in the U.S.) some in swollen rivers after slipping in and of course at sea, usually in boating accidents and others just chasing after some wildlife or other on the quayside and launching themselves accidently into water and panicking. These accidents happened in all weather conditions, summer, winter, spring and fall - winter accidents were almost always in icy or frozen river/lake accidents, whereby the dog fell in, couldn't keep afloat and died of hyperthermia - a dog life vest would have at least kept them afloat for a better chance of being brought to safety.
We have a choice if we wear a life jacket or not but we usually make our children wear them when appropriate - dogs like kids require their owners to judge when they should be wearing a dog life jacket - so what does it cost - approx $12-$25 depending on the size of your dog and the time to actually put the dog life jacket onto your dog. When and where? Easy answer - whenever your dog is going to be near or in water, a dog life vest is best to protect your dog against drowning.
