A Few Easy Tips for Puppy Potty Training
Everyone loves puppies. They are absolutely adorable bundles of energy and cuteness. However, for all their lovability, you probably won't find it very amusing if you are forced to spend all day cleaning up after them. This is especially true for dog owners with wall to wall carpeting. There is good news though. Housebreaking a new puppy is a simple process anymore.
Before you begin puppy potty training, it is important to remember your puppy cannot be held responsible for their bladder or bowel movements. They don't know the difference between the right or wrong place to go to the bathroom. Potty training for a new puppy is a process requiring both time and patience. Here are a few suggestions:
One of the first things you must do is to regularly take the puppy outside to a selected spot every half hour for the first few days. Gradually increase the going out gaps as the dog gets more accustomed to the routine. I know of a few dog owners who make use of a timer in the early stages. Take the puppy out for a walk first thing in the morning and just before you go to bed at night. It is recommended you take him out through the same door. As it begins to understand, the dog will scratch that same door as a way of showing you when it needs to go.
Start to pay attention for signs a puppy generally provides before they relieve themselves. Most dogs start circling around, sniffing or scratching a spot on the door or floor. This is often a cue to take them outside. Try not to leave the puppy all by itself in the initial stages for too long of a time. You need to have patience because accidents happen. Sometimes even trained pups have an accident once and awhile. Never shove his or nose into it either. You'll only confuse the dog and undo all the hard work done so far. Clean the accident area up because if it is not properly cleaned, the dog will more than likely go again on the same spot due to the smell.
Some dog owners use dog supplies for potty training such as crates. These are actually useful. Dogs avoid making messes where it sleeps. A crate must have enough space for the dog to be comfortable, but small enough so it can't use one corner as for a toilet. Never use the crate as a form of punishment.
