A Few Facts About Condensing Boilers

Condensing boilers are actually high efficiency water heaters

. They are reportedly ninety percent more efficient that the non-condensing versions are. They are mandatory for the homes and businesses in the United Kingdom. If you installed your system before March of 2005 then you are able to still have the non-condensing variety, but all of the items produced and installed after March of 2005 are required to be condensing boilers.

Condensing boilers are designed to use the waste heat that is sent to the flue to preheat the cold fluid as it enters into the system. They get their name because the water vapor that is created during the combustion is condensed into water. These units can be powered by gasoline or they can be powered by oil.

Mains gas is the preferred fuel for condensing boilers because mains gas is so much cheaper than the heating oil is. The problem is that in some areas the availability of mains gas is not reliable and the people in those areas are forced to continue to use heating oil.

The ordinary boiler burns fuel and in turn produces hot gases. They have a heat exchanger that these hot gases are passed through where their heat is used to raise the temperature of the water. Steam is one of the hot gases these items create. In order to increase the efficiency of these types of appliances the condensing boilers were designed to remove additional heat from the waste gas the unit is producing by turning the water vapor back into liquid. This causes the device to recover the latent heat that it was creating.

The main difference in the installation of condensing boilers and the other variety is the necessity of a heat exchanger condensate drainage system. The condensing boilers require these heat exchanger condensate drainage systems where the non-condensing versions do not. Otherwise the two types of appliances install in basically the same manner.

Because the condensate that is produced by the units is slightly acidic the materials that are used in the areas that come in contact with this condensate need to be crafted from aluminum alloys or stainless steel in the high temperature areas. In the areas that have a lower temperature plastics are frequently used in order to keep the product cost lower.

North America does not see the same amount of production and use of these appliances that the European nations do. In the Netherlands these types of units are widely used and advocated. In the United Kingdom regulations went into effect in March of 2005 requiring that these be the only variety of gas powered appliances that do these tasks to be produced. In the United States federal tax credits are offered to those individuals that install these energy efficient units. Some states within the United States have electric supply companies that will give their customers discounts for installing this variety of boiler in their homes and businesses. Governments are attempting to encourage their populations to use as many energy efficient products as possible.

Condensing boilers are being encouraged by most of the countries throughout the world. The need for advice from a professional company like Vaillant is required so that you get all of the credits and rebates available from the installation of condensing boilers.
