A Few Reasons Why Baseball Is Still The Darling Of The Masses
Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the US
. It has always been an inseparable part of the American culture. The origin of baseball dates back to the 19th century and its said to have evolved from an English game called rounders. As it grew in popularity, it got several names like townball, base, and finally the most popular term baseball. In early years, people in small towns used to play baseball by forming small teams and people in cities played by forming baseball clubs. Popular baseball legends believe that baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday. Nevertheless, Cartwright is considered as the father of baseball.
Though baseball is played with bat and ball, its not just about hitting the ball around the park. There are interesting rules and regulations which make this game so unique. Every baseball match consists of two teams with nine players in each team competing against each other. Of course, the ultimate goal of each team is to score more runs than their opponent and win the match. The baseball is white in color with red stitching on it and is roughly three inches in diameter. The baseball is played in a manner where one team plays defense and the other plays offense at any given time. The defense team wears baseball gloves with which they catch the ball. In the professional arena, the offense team uses a wooden bat. Sometimes aluminum or metal composite bats are allowed at amateur levels. The two common terms used to describe the field setup are infield and outfield. Infield is the part of the field that is closest to the field, while the grassy playing area that is far away from the pitch is called outfield. The infielders consist of the first baseman, second baseman and the third baseman and the shortstop is centered between the second and third basemen. The outfield comprises of the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder.
The game is initiated when the pitcher throws the ball as fast as he could at the batsman. If the batter does not hit the ball, the catcher grabs the ball with his gloves. For the batter, its counted as a miss. If the batter misses the ball three times consecutively, he is out. Each professional baseball game consists of nine innings; this may be fewer for lower levels.
Some of the common dismissals of the batsman:
*Strikeouts - a batsman is out if he misses to hit the ball three consecutive times
*Force outs - after the ball is hit, a player from the defense reaches the base before the runner does
*Fly outs - the ball is hit in the air and a defensive player catches it before it hits the ground
*Tag outs - a batsman is out because he is touched by a fielder who has the ball in his hand, by his hand or glove.
With the advent of technology, to the joy of the fans, a baseball match was first aired in cable television on July 17, 1964. The match entailed Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs battling it out for the cash prize. These days, with thousands of fans thronging in the baseball stadiums, most people prefer to watch baseball with their cable TV at the comfort of their home. This is mainly because of the fact that cable TV gives you the same kind of excitement and thrill that you get when you watch it live and not to mention the crystal clear picture and sound quality. I tend to enjoy a lot of baseball games with my TV that is powered by
Charter Cable. TV viewing is the easiest and the best way for people who dont find much time to go to stadiums and also for people who would prefer to save money on the high-priced tickets.
Id like to list out the 1975 Fisk game, the 1951 Thomson game, and the 1960 Mazeroski game as some of the best baseball matches to have put the audience on the edge of their seat. Some of the present players who have caught my attention are Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, Jayson Werth, Cliff Lee, and Victor Martinez. The game has seen classical legends like Ken Griffey, Jr, Sandford Sandy Koufax, Willie McCovey, Nolan Ryan, and Roy Campanella who are said to have revolutionized the game and thats the reason why baseball is still a darling of the masses for the people of US.
