A Few Tips For Selecting A Prom Theme
December is almost here, so that means, once winter formal is over
, you have got to start thinking about prom. And if you are on the student government, you will likely be one of the committee members making the final decision regarding the theme.
Now, whether or not your fellow students are enthusiastic about the theme depends on the school. You may want to consider responses within the student body from previous years. Did you hear your peers griping or complaining? Were their prom-goers that tried to conform to the theme somehow?
Sometimes it is hard to really get a feel for the position of the whole of the student body, particularly if you attend a large school, so just try to enjoy the process. If the administration will allow it, you may want to consider a vote among all upperclassmen once you have narrowed down the possibilities to three or four.
If the committee is having a difficult time chalking up ideas, then ask teachers and administrators about themes from the past ten or fifteen years. Together, you will want to rule out those that have become overdone or seem "tacky."
As you continue to brainstorm, appoint someone to keep track of all of the themes suggested. None of them should be skipped or go unrecorded, but that same person should also strike out a proposal as the group agrees to dismiss it.
You will want to consider the venue options and how they may each influence a correlation to the theme. I have a tremendous example: for my junior year, the theme was based upon the classic Star Wars saga and was held in an observatory in a nearby suburb.
This location featured a deck three stories up, upon which were situated two telescopes. One was pointed at Saturn and the other at Jupiter. The background for our pictures was a beautiful starry sky with a full moon. In part because of the theme, my junior prom remains one of my best memories.
On the other hand, my senior prom was held in a cramped ballroom at a local hotel. There were few decorations, and it has taken me over twenty minutes to actually remember what the theme was (Mardi Gras masquerade).
While it may seem to be irrelevant, you may want to consider the expected weather for the date you have selected. March through May encompass prom season, and in many states, it is still relatively cold.
Encourage girls to select modest prom dresses, as these will compensate for chilly weather and keep students from chaperones' reproof. I have seen a number of girls completely miss the concept of appropriate attire and have subsequently gotten themselves into trouble.
Prom is often the most exciting time of the year for upperclassmen. Choosing a great theme can make it even better. So have fun and be creative! You only get to enjoy prom so many times, you know!
