A Few Words About Depression And Those You Care About
Depression is a life threatening illness but many don't think of it in this fashion
very simply because they have not experienced the deepest, darkest depths of this illness. Depression is overwhelming and is not just about being happy or not being happy but about being functional.
Severe anxiety is not something to take lightly and like depression cake and neopolitian ice cream won't make these illnesses magically go away. It is not about being at a party or the life of the party, but is a deeper personal connection to the soul. Depression is responsible for making normal everyday functions a struggle with side effects of illness, smile less, tiredness, lethargic and weakness. Eating and stirring around is often unbearable chores for those afflicted with depression and to those who have never experienced any of these illnesses, don't be too quick to prejudge these as being non-sense.
Depression is real and it will take its health toll on an individual. The longer a person deals with depression the more likely they are prone to care less about themselves and as a result normal functions such as bathing and personal care becomes less of a concern as well as not caring about others. These individuals more often avoid friends, family and will opt out of social gatherings in favor of a solitary existence. Activities they once had passion for, no longer interests them.
Depression will begin slowly and creep its way into a person's life, starting with a lack of enjoyment that is replaced with reclusiveness, social avoidance and withdraw from what used to be a normal routine for the person. The victim cannot find enjoyment in anything that used to bring enjoyment and passion. Too often the person has thoughts of suicide and some act on those thoughts.
Often times intervention is the only way to reverse the damage that depression can inflict on its victims. Too often the victim cannot see what is really going on in their world and how it is affecting those who love and care about them. Coercing, tricking or even forcing a person into getting help and taking medications that usually stabilize the person enough to get them started on the road t recovery. Medications generally will be necessary for a few months or until the stabilization process is in full swing and the rays of new hope began to radiate from the person.
If you see a loved one avoiding social circumstances and becoming less active you may need to intervene. At first this may not be easy but sometimes finding an online checklist can help the individual to see for themselves that they really are in need of help. Getting their acknowledgment of the problem is the key to getting them the help they need.
