A Flight Of Six
Locations for a trip are not difficult decisions
. Efforts were made by an Australian businessman and brainstormer to arrange the first charter flight to go over Antarctica and this became a reality in February 13, 1877 after much consideration of this attitude of travelers.
With a map in his hands, this lively 33 year old electronic executive wondered why there are no regular flights that could accomplish a trip to the Antarctic and come back to Sydney on the same day.
He thought of asking the Australian premier flag carrier to charter a 707 in November of 1976 after realizing how they are one of the few developed countries that could actually help him out with this kind of trip.
In the beginning they thought that everything was a pawn. Besides not being able to abide by such a request the Australian carrier was also worrying about how financially benefiting this plan could be. For the charter manager he changed his mind after seeing his determination and seriousness.
It was not as easy to convince people to buy tickets for such a trip. Accomplished by the charter during the first few weeks were six passengers. There was word on the streets and a Sydney newspaper also ran a story about the flight.
He received a lot more passengers who were interested in joining the flight after the story was published. In a spam of four hours they already had enough passengers for a 707. That day, their passenger list was as many as the capacity of three 707s.
Such a response was rather perplexing and the airline needed to be contacted for two 747s. Such a request was not taken seriously at first. They did manage to get one jumbo, though.
According to the airline spokesman in Sydney, the best time to view Antarctica is during the Southern Hemisphere's summer November through February, when the weather is generally clear.
Here there are no guarantees when it comes to viewing conditions and visibility is always in consideration of a risk basis. It was said that no additional safety precautions were necessary. A routine pattern is what the flight will follow, says the superintendent of Australia's major airline.
He is a 22 year veteran who flew the first flight of his country's flag carrier to South America but never a flight like this one in particular.
He said he didn't know what to expect to see. What he thought of it was completely untouched grandeur. There is nothing that can match how white the white over there is and how the shades of blue are.
He saw nothing but pure magnificence. I had an unusual feeling of elation, to see as far as the eye could see.
Seating arrangements were swapped every now and then especially for those with window seats. A computer system has been employed to designate the viewing interval. When it comes to the flying pattern they adopted, it made sure that maximum viewing was always possible.
Other things that they did not fail to consider included penetration over all varieties of the Antarctic scenery like mountains, ice plateaus, glaciers, and coastline not to mention taking account of the best possible views regardless of how extreme the weather conditions could be.
Roughly 12 1/2 hours is the time it would take to fly over the area. Should they find themselves not flying over Antarctica, what the guests are treated too are lectures, games, and movies. The airline offers its customary cabin service and full course meals.
