In order to become suitable for practicing, dentists have to go through post graduate dentistry studies and post supplementary education for many years. In dentistry, we can find the intermingling of art and science. Keeping our teeth in perfect condition is the primary responsibility of every dentist.

By perfect condition, it is meant to have white colored, disease and cavity free, gap free, well shaped and unblemished set of teeth. A person has to go through minimum three years of undergraduate training for earning a DDS. Some of the dental schools ask for a bachelor's degree as minimum qualification. Out of the four year course, two years are meant for basic medical and dental sciences and two for clinical training. There are also other test a dentist must pass. The first part of the programs consists of physiology, biochemistry, pathology, occlusion, microbiology, dental structure and anatomic sciences.

The last two years are devoted to learn operative dentistry, prosthodontics, pain control, oral surgery, orthodontics, pediodontics, radiology, oral pathology, endodontics, periodontics and pharmacology. Though a majority of the students start practice after graduation, there are a few who go for higher studies.

In order to practice independently, licensing exam has to be passed by the dentist. A ethics test also must be completed and passed after this. Once all these are cleared, a dentist will become lawfully eligible for practice. DDS dentists are to pursue continuous education to maintain the license and also to remain abreast of the technological developments happening regularly.
