A Glimpse At Munnar

The lovely hill station of Munnar is situated in the popular Western Ghats

, a mountain range in the Idikki district of the Indian state of Kerala. Kerala is known for its magnificent scenic beauty, a kind of beauty which is very verdant in nature. The name of the town is supposed to mean "Three rivers" indicating its position at the concourse of Madhurapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers. This town is a part of the Kannan Devan Hills village in the largest panchayat of Idukki district.Munnar does not have a railway head but nearby towns have railway stations. Ernakulam and Aluva situated around 140 kilometers away have their own railway stations. Cochin International Airport which is 105 kilometers away from Munnar is the nearest airport.

Munnar is best known for its extensive tea plantation producing one of the best kind of tea in India. In fact, the hill station is surrounded by the highest tea gardens of the country. Tea estates, waterfalls, mountain mist and wildlife sanctuaries combined together is what Munnar stands for in short. The salubrious weather and peaceful environment bring in hosts of tourist all throughout the year. Another heavenly view is the sight of the landscape dominatyed by low-drifting clouds and mist-filled valleys. The blissfulness the atmosphere creates is hard to explain in words. This town is like a little heaven with the perfect blend of harmony and life.

The flora of this region includes a particular kind of flower which covers the hills in blue once in every twelve years. This flower is called Neelakurinchi. It last bloomed in the year 2006 turning the whole valley into a blue paradise. You can also locate a rare breed of mountain goat known as Nilagiri tahr. Durng the British reign over the country, Munnai was the summer capital of the Empire. But not much has changed regarding its beauty and it still remains in touch with its old charm with its calm lakes, winding streams, v misty peaks, rare plants and rich wildlife. Trekking, boating, clying, visit to plantations, paragliding, tour to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary can add a fun touch to a Munnar visit.

The region of Munnar and around lies at a height of about 1500 meters above sea level and includes one of the highest hills in South India. The temperature generally ranges from 5 degree Celsius in winters to 25 degree Celsius in summers. The mean maximum daily temperature is low during the summer months with 19 degree Celsius being the highest. Most of the flora and flauna have disappeared due to the cutting off of forests to set up tea plantations in the region. But some regions such as Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kurinjimala Sanctuary, Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, Anamudi Shola National Park, Eravikulam National Park and Pampadum Shola National Park are completely dedicated to protecting whatever remains.
