It's hard to miss the many commercials featuring cars that air on television

. They can feature special effects and promotional language that is enough to make anyone believe they will be the coolest resident on the block if they run down and buy this particular vehicle. But it's important to stop yourself from acting hastily. Before doing anything, sit back and think.

Do you really need to have the shiniest and newest on the market? Would having a new car make you happier as opposed to a used model? This does not mean you should have to settle for a clunker that looks like it could die from exhaustion when you simply turn it on. No, these days there are a lot more good used cars to choose from, with benefits you may not have ever thought of.

When you purchase any of a large selection of used cars, you're going to save a lot of money in your budget. New cars tend to lose their worth the second they leave the car dealership parking lot, and when you get something less fresh off the production line, you will be skipping that step. In fact, the decreasing worth will be to your advantage. Why spend up to twenty thousand dollars or more for a car that strikes your fancy when you certainly don't have to?

Besides taking advantage of a car's shrinking market worth, you will also get more for your money. Some people carry the belief that they need to replace their car every year or two in order to be considered in style and with the times, so their loss is your gain. Have you always wanted a fancy navigation system that tells you what direction you're headed in? How about a built in television visible in the backseats?

Those kinds of extra features are not cheap in a new car, but with a used car you can pick and choose these features in something more affordable. Even better, there are a few instances where you may even be able to barter with the seller on how much you will be spending on the car. If they're rather desperate or in a hurry to get rid of it, that is definitely to your advantage. This approach wouldn't quite work at a new car dealership, as you would probably be laughed at for even trying it.

Some independent sellers will even prefer cash as payment, so if you have bad credit, this will not be a hurdle to jump over. Whether the car you want is a Buick, GMC, Hyundai or Chevrolet model, tell yourself that you don't need to have the newest thing out there. Used cars, whether you get them from a dealership or a single seller you found on the internet, can be just as good, if not better. Sure, there won't be what some call the new car smell, but in retrospect that shouldn't matter, and besides, new car smell comes in a spray now.
