If you are anything like I used to be you will often get between your bed sheets at night and find that you cannot sleep for hours or you will wake up in the middle of the night and just not be able to get back to sleep again. However when I travelled in a car, train or plane I could get to sleep at the drop of a hat.
All day long I used to rush around, first to get breakfast, catch the train to get to the office on time, get the work done, get the train home, watch the evening match. There just was not time to rest.
When I got to bed I found that it was the first time in the day that I had actually nothing to do. This meant that I went back through everything that had happened during the day in my mind. I analysed everything that I had done and tried to think of a better way to do it. My mind became much more active than it had been all day.
It just seemed though that when I was travelling in a train or car, I just let the countryside take over. I was normally listening to some soothing music to pass away the journey and I soon found myself fast asleep.
In the middle of the night I found that the best thing to do was to get out of bed, go into another room and do some activity like a jigsaw. I think that that either bored me to sleep or my eyes get so drowsy just looking at all those pieces of blue sky.
When I put on the television or radio it just seemed to make things worse. Because it was something that I was not really interested in, my thoughts kept drifting back to the happenings during the day.
When we had our first child we discovered that a very good way to get her to sleep during the day was to put her in her pink pram and push her around the streets for a while. We even tried taking her out in the car and that worked as well.
She did not have any of the thoughts of the day that I used to keep me awake but the journey soon seemed to send her to sleep. I think that the wheels of a buggy must work in the same way of those of a train or car and just become very soothing or maybe it is just moving that helps instead of lying still.
Our baby cured my insomnia. I got so little sleep as she kept waking up that when I eventually did get back to bed I just dropped right off.
