By choosing the type and amount of tobacco and the type of wrap, the designer of a cigar can alter the taste and fragrance significantly with each cigar. For many high-quality cigars the tobacco is rolled by hand to ensure that each cigar contains the right blend of tobacco to ensure that the smoker fully enjoys the flavor of the cigar. When rolling a cigar, it is important to ensure that the tobacco is not packed too tightly as this will affect the cigar's ability to burn properly and may cause the flavor of the cigar to become too strong.

When these hand rolled cigars are made, the individual who is rolling the cigar will stuff two to four different tobacco leaves inside as filler. The leaves are also kept just a bit moist to ensure a flavorful smoking experience. The tobacco leaves are rolled together with a binder. The filler is put into a mold along with the leaf wrapper for the cigar. Once the cigar is officially rolled, it is trimmed up a bit and then it is capped.

As a result of the high tobacco content of most cigars and the fact that they burn significantly longer than cigarettes, cigars are designed to be enjoyed in moderation. It is uncommon for a cigar smoker to smoke more than two cigars a day. More recently, however, some cigars have been designed to be smoked in a way similar to cigarettes. These cigars normally come in packages and contain precut tips to allow the smoker to easily light up the cigar without having to assert significant effort in preparing the cigar.
