A Guide To Choose Wheelchair Lifts For Vans
For a handicapped, travelling long distances through vans can be a cumbersome job with their wheelchairs on
. Fortunately, today there are a number of wheelchair lifts that make handicap passengers enter and exit the van easy while still sitting on the chair. But buying any of them might not work, if you really want your loved ones an easy life. This is due to the reason that all lifts are not equal. They all are different in their feature and performance. So, how to identify which one will be a suitable option? Well, there are a couple of things you need to keep in mind before committing your final selection.
It is important to decide whether the lift will be used through the side door or through rear cargo door. Although both of them are feasible option, but not all the lifts are designed to support operation from both the sides. If you are choosing side entrance, single arm lifts are just a perfect option, though it has less lifting capacity. These devices can raise maximum of 600 pounds. So it would not be a very good option for weighty people and larger wheelchairs.
On the other hand if you are choosing back entrance, dual-arm wheelchair lifts will an ideal choice. This is because dual-arms are bulky and rear cargo door provides more space to the passenger to enter the vehicle with their wheelchair. Whilst dual-arm lifts are bulky, they are dual stable as it has two arms for better support and weight distribution. For the same reason they can work with heavier load of as much as 800 pounds. So, if you are looking for such device for large handicap passenger you must choose dual-arms.
Another issue that has to be decided is whether you want internally mounted or under-vehicle mounted wheelchair lift. Internally mounted wheelchair lifts are cheaper and easy to access for maintenance and services. However, these are more space consuming and can also block the entrance or curb the passengers freedom of mobility on seat.
Under-vehicle lifts are though more expensive but do not consume any space inside the van and neither do they block the entrance. Also they can lift more weight which is a plus point for weighty passenger. Despite of so many benefits ground clearance becomes a major concern with these devices since they are mounted under the vehicle. Apart from that they are a bit difficult to maintain because of their tough accessibility.
Choosing a wheelchair lift shouldnt be tough job if you know about the features of the device. Acquiring knowledge about the types of these types of devices and their feature is an only way to find the best option around.
