A Guide To Vegetable Garden Irrigation

If you are thinking of setting up a vegetable garden this summer then you may wish to consider garden irrigation as a means of watering your plants

. In vegetable production a good water supply is directly related to the quality and yield of the vegetables. Here in this article we shall look at some top gardening techniques and how irrigation will benefit your vegetables growth.

Firstly with garden irrigation you need to check the soil moisture regularly to keep on top of things, irrigation is needed when the top 2-4 inches of soil is dry. This is very important if you are using mulch, where the water can be held into the soil for longer amounts of time. If you have houseplants that are planted in mulch a watering meter can be a good way of determining the soil moisture beneath it. However it worth noting that cheap meters are rather inaccurate and if the fertility is high then the meter will read on the wet side. Morning irrigation is best when the temperate is cooler but slowly rising for outdoor plants.

Sprinkler garden irrigation is considered more efficient for watering plants because it is very easy to measure the amount of water and manage it. Since drip irrigation will cover the entire soil surface then weed seed germination becomes high. However it is discouraged on some vegetable growing (potatoes, tomatoes and peppers) because they are prone to diseases such as Early Blight. The water splashing spreads the disease organisms and the water lying on top of the leaves creates perfect conditions for the disease to develop.

Drip garden irrigation is a good solution for a block-garden lay out and raised beds. There are several different drip systems that are available on the market, including bubblers, drippers, in-line drip hoses and soaker hoses. One big disadvantage of the drip irrigation system is that the water needs to be relatively clean as systems can plug with too much dirt, algae and salts. However if your water supplies are filtered then this should not be a problem and drip irrigation will work well.

Drip systems can be easily automated with a multi controller like the lawn or a single controller that connects the tap before the hose. Some single controllers are manually turned on and automatically turn off after a set amount of minutes or gallons. Expensive models will automatically turn the water off at the intervals set by the gardener.
