The All Important Thread Counts

The thread count will help a buyer judge the quality of the sheets. You will see the thread count listed alongside the product name. Thread counts between 80 and 190 mean the sheets are a bit rough. Sheets between 200 and 280 are considered as adequate.

However, the 300 to 400 thread count sheets are more comfortable and softer. Sheets with 500 and higher thread counts are the softest and most comfortable.

In some sheets the thread count is not indicated. This is true with some flannel sheets. In these cases the ounces per flannel are indicated instead. For topnotch flannel, get those with at least 4 oz. / sq. yd. (113g / 0.9 sq. m).

Composition and Materials

Those buying flat sheets must also check the material. Egyptian cotton is preferred by many because of its softness and resiliency. Other topnotch materials include silk, satin and cashmere.

Other types of materials include cotton with polyester blends, bamboo fiber, cotton, linen and rayon. While the materials are definitely crucial, the thread has a bigger impact on the quality of the sheets.

Sizes and Dimensions

The flat sheets are available in the following sizes. The twin measures 66 x 96 inches (or 167 x 243 cm); the X-long twin is 66 x 102 inches (or 167 x 259 cm) and the full is 81 x 96 inches (or 205 x 243 cm).

The queen flat sheet is 90 x 102 inches (or 228 x 259 cm) and the king 108 x 102 inches (or 274 x 259 cm). Some manufacturers may offer different sizes so check it out.
