A Guide to Making HDR photographs

Have you ever come across a scene so impressive that you want to capture it one camera? So impressive that you want to hang it up on your wall so you can look at it forever. There's one catch: it has a lot of contras and you're photographing right into the sun. What do you do in those kinds of situations to get a good photograph? The answer is taking a HDR or high dynamic range photograph.

So why are HDRs so special? Well they have the ability to show a greater dynamic range of luminance than other images. It creates a photograph that is much closer to what our eyes perceive then regular photography. You will need to do a couple of things in order to know how to make HDRs.

Things you will need in order to make this.

1. A camera that can give you a lot of control over all the settings. You could do this with compact camera but if you have a DSLR or digital single-lens reflex camera it is going to be a little easier. Shooting in RAW mode is also a possibility. I will explain this later on in the article.

2.Something to keep your camera from moving. Preferably a tripod but it can be anything.

3.Photo editing software. You can either use Photoshop if you have it or GIMP, which is free.

Next I will tell you how to make HDR images. You can make them use one of these two methods. The first one is going to produce a much better result, but it takes a bit more time. Here we go:

How to make HDR images Step # 1:

Put your camera on the tripod and focus it on what you want to photograph. Next we are going to alter the lighting settings. The first thing you are going to have to do is underexposing the image. Do this by putting the camera on manual and adjust the shutter or the aperture. Let say you underexpose four stops to begin with.

Next up is to under expose again but this time you underexpose two stop in stead of four.

After step two take a regular photograph, meaning you don't overexpose or underexpose.

How to make HDR images Step # 4:

For step four you are going to repeat the first two step but this time overexposing the image. Eventually you should end up with about five images.

How to make HDR images Step # 5:

Open your photo editing software and load up all the images. It is best to put them all in one file. Depending on what software package you are using you need to merge these photographs together. Look on the internet for how to do this for your specific package.

Alternative:

While the previous technique produces a much better result you can still make a HDR without taking five different images. Instead of taking five different images you can photograph your subject one time but using RAW format. This will allow you to create the five different images from that one RAW file. The next step is to merge them together like you did with the first method.
