The responsibilities of the assistant are manifold ranging from working in the doctor's office, checking the patient in, maintaining patient's medical records and even giving shots, helping in medical billing. To work as an assistant, you need to complete one year certificate course or two years associate's degree program from any accredited schools or institutions.

To work professionally, it is important to have certification awarded by American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). While choosing medical assistant schools, you need to verify their course curriculum and whether they will prepare you for such certifications. After finishing the degree course, you will be eligible for CMA certification from AAMA while for the RMA certification awarded by AMT, you need to have at least 5 years work experience as an assistant. In order to take the CMA exam, you need to attend training programs accredited by The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School or the

Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The CMA certification is considered as most valued and desirable in the medical field but even those having one or two certifications may land up with lucrative opportunities. The CMA exam can be taken online which is multiple choice oriented. The result is available readily though the official certification may take 6-10 weeks to reach you. There are many job opportunities to work as an assistant, be it a Doctor's Office or Hospitals or Outpatient care centers or residential care facilities. The medical assistant salary will vary depending on location, experience, education and so on.

Those working for private clinics or even hospitals may expect better pay scale than those employed in Doctor's Office or care centers. However, the experience and degree and specialization are always given importance. The pay scale can be anything in between $20,000-$30,000 for a beginner while those having experience of 5-10 years may expect $25,000-$35,000. If you are more senior with 20 years or more experience, drawing a handsome package $40,000 is not that tough along with additional benefits. Having interest in medical profession is one of the most important criteria while choosing a career to work as an assistant.
