A Healthier Lifestyle For Baby
People often think they need to wait until this or that has been done before having a baby. The "this or that" is usually related to money, but not always. There is never, and will never be, the perfect time for you to have a baby. You will always think you need more money, a bigger house, a different job, less debt, or a healthier lifestyle before having baby. Stop waiting; and start changing now.
Often, when people realize this and do get pregnant, all of a sudden, they are masters at getting all the things done they've said for years had to happen. Something about being pregnant, knowing baby will be here in 9 months, and the excitement involved send moms into overdrive. It's also a time when mom realizes the family needs to live a healthier lifestyle, often including being "greener". Wow, it's a lot to think about and do. Everything won't get done, but it's a perfect time to start living a healthier lifestyle and managing your budget. A few things to get you started are listed below.
1. Buy in bulk at discount stores. There are discount stores that sell everything from food to supplies in bulk. It often means that the price per item is cheaper. It certainly means less packaging, which means less waste. Make sure you will use it all before buying it, especially if it is a perishable food. Throwing money down the drain is not the goal here.
2. Plant a garden. People everywhere are realizing the benefits of fresh, locally grown foods. If you don't have room for a garden, many communities offer gardens from which you can purchase a share; or simply buy local produce from the farmer's market. Either of these options is often less expensive, but are definitely beneficial to a healthier lifestyle.
3. Start using non-toxic cleaning products. With the popularity of organic products, these are now readily available at any grocery store and discount store. Often more expensive, they are usually better for your family's health, have less packaging, and clean just as well. You can also make your own at home. Formulas are readily available online. Simple vinegar and water works well for many cleaning needs.
4. Go to the grocery with a list and stick to it. You are less likely to impulse shop if you have a list and are not hungry while you are there. This goes a long way toward staying within budget.
5. Buy "gently used" items for you and baby. Most communities have consignment, thrift, and good will stores, as well as co-op events. You can save huge amounts of money shopping here for maternity clothes, baby items like clothes, toys, cribs, strollers and more. It's not unheard of to find items still in the original packaging or with the price tag still attached.
There are many more things you can do to live a healthier, greener lifestyle and to better manage your budget; hopefully these will give you some ideas to implement while waiting for baby to arrive and to continue well into the years ahead.
