A Hearing Test To Find The Cause Of Tinnitus

Tinnitus or ringing in the ears is a problem for many people

. A hearing test might pick up on an associated problem that can be treated. In most cases, tinnitus is a sign of age related hearing loss. Often tinnitus is bothersome, but in some cases, it can be debilitating.

Some common causes for tinnitus are aging, damage to the inner ear, medications, and some blood vessel disorders. In some of these cases, the ringing in the ears can cause a life saving diagnosis. In other cases, a patient may be told to stop taking certain medications. There are two types of tinnitus. Objective tinnitus can be heard by you, and your doctor will be able to hear it too. Subjective tinnitus is only heard by you.

If you have tinnitus after a cold or flu, it is a good idea to check in with your physician. Another time to check in is if you suddenly begin having symptoms that you didn't have before. If your tinnitus only occurs for a moment once and while it is not a problem, unless it bothers you. Tinnitus is described as a ringing, buzzing, whistling, hissing, or clicking sound.

If you decide that you need to see a doctor, you will have a hearing test as part of your exam. You will be asked to sit in a soundproof room. Your audiologist will have you signal when you hear a sound. This will help determine whether you are hearing within normal ranges. You may also be asked to clench your jaw, or move your eyes. If the intensity of tinnitus changes, this could tell your doctor more about your problem. Part of your exam may involve an MRI or other type of scan to help determine the cause of the ringing.

The sound your tinnitus takes on can tell your doctor a lot about the potential causes. For instance, if you are hearing high-pitched ringing, this might indicate exposure to loud noise. If you are hearing a heartbeat, this could mean you are suffering from high blood pressure. A low pitched ringing can signal meniere's disease. In most cases, the cause of tinnitus is never found.

Your treatment may be ear wax removal, or to change medications. In some cases, since no cause is found, the use of a white noise machine or fan while sleeping might be suggested. No matter the reason for your tinnitus, you will feel better knowing you had a hearing test and ruled out any serious complications.
