Also, consider where you're going to put it. Make sure the item is obvious and lightens the room but is not shocking. If you're going for flowers, consider the color as well. Make sure they are not the same color as the wall paint or any other dominating color in the room; these colors would just drown them up and make them an unnoticeable accent.
