A History Of FingerPrint Jewellery

If you are new to fingerprint jewellery, or have just stumbled upon it, let me explain a bit about it. It's origins are in the USA, with the arrival of a new jewellery product called Precious Metal Clay, made by Mitsubishi manufactures. This exciting product is fine silver 999%, and is a type of clay that once fired in a kiln, turns to pure silver. It moulds to any shape is fantastic at picking up fine detail, particularly fingerprints.

PMC or Art Clay is really capable of capturing fine detail in everything, and great at picking up the fine lines of fingerprints. In the early 2000s, jewellery makers in the UK caught onto the idea that tiny fingerprint of our loved ones captured in silver make a really unique keepsake gift, and the fingerprint jewellery industry was born!

Little Pinkies has been making fingerprint jewellery for 5 years online, and there are now many companies that offer this service. Some, like Smallprint, are a franchise company, and their jewellers are made up of (usually) trained mums who prefer you to be there in situ to take the print into the clay as they believe it gives a better result. Their jewellery is all hand-made and is lovely.

At Little Pinkies, we tend not to do that. Instead we use a fingerprint casting kit' in order to get a fingerprint. These kits are fantastic at capturing fine details of a print and work really well. The casting kits are safe, non toxic and in fact are used as standard across the USA to capture a newborn's footprint for ID purposes in hospital.

Little Pinkies fingerprint jewellery is also slightly different to all the others; we no longer make the jewellery by hand, instead we engrave the details of the prints onto jewellery which is either stainless steel, sterling silver or 9 carat gold. The result is stunning pieces of jewellery that are stronger and scratch less, so your keepsake lasts and lasts. Because we no longer hand make the pieces, our prices are a lot cheaper than other fingerprint companies too!!!

Fingerprint jewellery is fast becoming every mums' choice of keepsake jewellery, so if you have not yet had a look, go ahead, you'll be surprised at how lovely it really is.
