A Home Needs To Be Secure
The debate started at home the other day when we had friends visiting us
. My charming wife and mutual friends of ours were into a heated discussion about the benefits of a Security System. The Smiths home had been broken into and they were devastated as they had lost all their savings and Paula had lost her diamond brooch which happened to have been a family heirloom that had been in the family for the past 4 generations.
John who was inconsolable was downing his 3rd drink and describing the crime scene for the umpteenth time. They had been away on a brief vacation to Vegas (they deserved the break as both are busy professionals) he being a successful architect and she an interior designer. A happy couple with an enviable double income, they had their home filled with expensive curios and gadgets and there was quite a bit of jewelry as well. Back from the vacation they were in for the shock of their lives when they found their home broken into and in a perfect mess. The burglar had ransacked the place and would not need to work for quite some time, provided he doesnt ever get caught.
Coming back to the debate, it was actually to do with me and my wife. I strongly felt that the Smiths needed to have gone in for a comprehensive burglary insurance plan and safeguarded their belongings. However, my wife was advocating the merits of going in for an effective Home Security System. Her argument was that it not only prevented such incidents but also was very cost effective. Actually, according to her there would only be a onetime investment which would also pay for itself over a period of time. My contention however as all insurance agents would agree, was that an insurance plan was far more effective and though a recurring premium needed to be paid , one could lay a claim in case of such mishaps. This was again countered by the sweet lady that my wife is that laying a claim was something and actually getting the money was something else alright. This prompted me to think whose side is she on, anyway? The Smiths came to her rescue(not mine, mind you) by saying that they would rather go for an effective security system with a onetime cost, though on a much higher side, than for an insurance plan that would cost a lot less. They contended that securing the home would ensure that they had an enjoyable vacation, knowing pretty well that their house would be safe and the security system would deter the most seasoned of burglars.
Giving this a serious thought, it seemed to make better sense (wives always seem to make better sense dont they?). The wife had, by now conveniently pulled out the link
ADT Home Security on her laptop and the Smiths, of course got convinced to go for a home Security System and I started seriously thinking about going for a security system for my home as well.
