There are 29 caves in Ajanta which depicts the cultural history of India. The caves were first discovered in the year 1819 by John Smith,a British officer who went on for a hunting expedition and discovered the Ajanta caves. The caves depicts the Buddhist history and the designs in the cave portrays the life of Buddha from time to time. Most of the caves are monasteries, the caves were mainly the residing and praying areas of the monks. The area is peaceful. The caves were built in two phases, the first phase being the 2 BCE and the second phase being 600 CE. The structure and designs of the caves presents the two schools of thought of Buddhism,Hinayana and Mahayana. Hinayana, where Buddha is presented in the form of some symbols like stupa, a set of footprints and a throne. And Mahayana presents Buddhas human form. The caves also presents the stories of the jataka tale.
Ellora caves are carved out of the basaltic hill 30 km from Aurangabad. Ellora caves are known for its architectural elegance unlike the Ajanta caves which are known for its historical and structural aesthetics. Ellora has around 34 caves, out of which 12 are Buddhists, 17 Hindu and 5 are jain caves. The caves are very simple looking but the value lies here that the caves are carved out of the solid rocks and that too by human hands using simple tools. These caves were built during the 5th -7th century. There are several inscriptions we can find in the Ellora caves. The main attraction of the Ellora caves is the Kailasa temple and the 16th cave which is the monolithic cave.
Apart from the famous caves the place also have some other attractions like Grishneshwar which is the Shiva temple, deeply revered by Hindus. There is Khuldabad as well, which is the holy place of the Deccan Muslims. It is also the final resting place of the mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Daulatabad is 13 km from the Ellora caves and is the hill fort of Daulatabad. Earlier known as Devgiri, it was renamed Daulatabad by Sultan Mohammad Bin Tughlaq in the 12th century. It also serves as a tour spot.
Though the place is famous for the caves but the other areas of the place are also worth a visit. So Ajanta and Ellora adds beautifully to the historical heritage of India.
