Each player has a set of eight pawns, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, one king, and one queen a total of 16 pieces for every player. Both players take turns in moving a piece in accordance with the game rules but not during castling where two pieces are allowed to move. It is a practice that the players with light colored pieces make the opening move and the corresponding piece can land on an empty square or on an enemy occupied provided that the piece can capture the opponents.
