A Look At Condensation Dampness

Condensation dampness occurs when the air inside a house is moist

, and it condenses into liquid state if it comes in contact with lower temperature windows, walls, or even metal roof sheeting. At first they are not obvious, but over time, you will see them forming into stains and can become moldy and smell musty. Worst case scenario is that the materials the condensation forms on rots.

Condensation dampness typically occurs during the winter season (or in humid places), when windows and doors are sealed tightly to keep the cool air from outside coming in. As this happens, the air inside is warm from the presence of people inside the house. Generally, the more people there are in the house, the warmer it becomes due to body heat and their breathing, as well as the cooking and heating that takes place in the house. Since everyone is closed shut in, the moist air is unable to move out, thus, lingering in the atmosphere until it comes in contact with a cooler surface, in which it becomes water. This cold surface can be on any part of the house top, bottom, front, or back. Since we do not pay attention to it, we are not able to tell that water has formed onto it until the color begins to develop.

When this happens, damp treatments are necessary to prevent the problem from further building up. Some of the DIY damp treatments the household can participate in are to install ceiling insulation where it can stop the ceiling and hard to reach high walls from becoming too cold. At the same time, you can save up on the heater from heating the whole house up. Another thing that can be done is to allow for ventilation from time to time so that the humidity in the house can be decreased. This can be done by opening the windows or door for a while. Also, heat sources should be vented out and not into the roof, where it is colder, or else condensation dampness will appear there instead.
