Diaries can be an important part of life, and can be used for many different purposes

. The traditional way of keeping one is to write your thoughts in a little book, and store it away for safekeeping. With diary software, you can now write diaries on a computer.

Some folk like to jot down their personal experiences or thoughts. By referring to them later, they may find help in analyzing their own feelings or emotions, thus finding help in their quest for self-improvement. Some folk just may want to preserve their experiences and thoughts for posterity.

Others may just want to keep a record of their activities for accountability or planning purposes. Still others may need to track one particular type of activity for either personal or professional reasons.

The traditional way of doing things has both its advantages and disadvantages. Security with the traditional way can be problematic. Suppose, for example, you've written things that are meant to be confidential, that you don't want revealed until after you've passed away. Sure, you could lock your little book away in a desk drawer, but how secure is that? For best security, you'd need to lock it away in some sort of a safe. And, how many of you have ever gone back to something you've written, only to find that you can't read your own handwriting?

On the other hand though, the traditional way lets you write wherever, whenever you want to. You don't have to haul a computer around in order to create an entry. And, sharing with posterity is just a matter of mentioning where your book and the keys to unlock it are in your will.

There are lots of different programs for anyone who has need to keep a journal of some type. Some are either free or offer free versions, and some are either shareware or commercial. A search of the web can help you locate them.

Most programs include some type of encryption technology, to ensure that your private data stay private. (If you desire to share your journal after you've gone to the great beyond, you can leave the password in either your will or in a safe deposit box.) This would actually be more secure than leaving a book in a desk drawer.

Some programs were designed for general purpose journal-keeping, and others were designed for special purpose-type journals. Most all of them are designed to be used with the Windows family of operating systems, but some can also be used with either Linux or Mac.
