A Look At Reality Martial Arts
Pretty much everyone has heard of MMA; the sport that is Mixed Martial Arts seems to be consistently gaining popularity
. One could even say that mixed martial arts is outgrowing boxing in popularity these days. Due to that popularity, youve got Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai studios sprouting up like the flowers in springtime. This is not a bad thing. All people can definitely gain great confidence and fitness if they enroll in a good mixed martial arts class.
Where mixed martial arts is recognizable and popular; there is also RMA, reality martial arts, sitting in the corner like a wallflower at a college frat party. Lets take a look and see a little more of what reality martial arts is all about.
One could say that reality martial arts is similar to military self defense. The training for reality martial arts is definitely more like hand to hand combat training that soldiers go through; thats for sure. The big difference between MMA and RMA is that mixed martial arts are for sport. While competition is tough and fighting is intense, it is still for fun. Reality martial arts are in a sense more like military self defense (and not just due to the hand to hand combat training aspect). Reality martial arts is not sport fighting. It does not include the four Rs of MMA rings, referees, rules and rounds.
In mixed martial arts training, the focus is on take-downs, strikes and grappling. In hand to hand combat training for real world applications, the focus is more on the fact that these four Rs are missing. That fact changes the mindset of the victim. When you know there is no one there to pull you out from under your opponent, you will know that you are truly fighting for your life. This is not a competition or a sport, it is self defense to the fullest degree. When you win, you do not get a belt; you get to go home (hopefully unscathed).
Reality martial arts training, like military self defense, teaches you about real fighting. It does not sugar coat violence; and is thus often thought of as being too brutal. But violence IS violent; and if you want to protect yourself from it, wouldnt you want to really know how? Military self defense is a brutal way of fighting; precisely because it has to be. On the streets, just like on a battlefield, the rules are whatever you make up as you go along.
The goal of self defense is to get away from an attacker; no matter what you have to do to make that happen. As long as you are legally and morally justified in your defense, you can use anything that you can get your hands on as a weapon to fight back and save your life. If that is your keys, your cane, your fingers or a rock; you do what you must and you learn to do these things in reality martial arts.
