Stalking the scene though is the dark horse of Corian, a futuristic man-made material that is slowly finding more and more widespread use, in everything from walls to ceilings, from guitar necks (that white thing that the strings slot into) to of course kitchen worktops.

Corian is the brand name for a solid surfacing material created by DuPont. It is composed of acrylic polymer and alumina trihydrate and is to all intents and purpose a synthetic rock, but one with some great properties.

The reason why Corian has become such a popular choice for kitchen worktops is that

Corian is easy to clean and is NSF/ANSI 51 Certified for food contact. It is non-porous Corian and stains do not penetrate the surface. With proper cleaning, Corian also resists the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria.

You can get Corian sinks too sinks that can beautifully and seamlessly integrate with your worktop, giving your kitchen clean sleak lines, with much fewer nooks for bacteria and dirt to accumulate in.

It is also a solid-surface material: which is really just jargon for saying that is is the same all the way through the same texture, colour, everything. This means that if it gets scratched it can easily be polished out. You can even extend your worktops, and replace sections in the unlikely event of a traumatic injury to your poor worktop.

One of its big advantages is that it melts under very high temperatures this enables it to be welded, and also formed into whatever shape you can imagine, which has drawn the attention of interior designers and architects.

And, being man-made, it is available in hundreds of colours with remarkable color fidelity, meaning that if a section needs replacing in years hence, a reasonable colour match can be found for your worktop.
