The movie industry is big business. You will find various types of movies for every occasion and mood. Those who need a good laugh tend to turn to comedies. Others who need a dash of love can turn to romances. Other times, people are in the mood for excitement and bone-chilling thrills. For this, they turn to horror movies. Horror films have many sub-genres, with one of the most popular being zombie movies.
Zombies are not a new invention or idea. In fact, they have been a part of various cultures for quite some time. Different areas of the world tend to refer to zombies in different ways. Most people are familiar with the classic version based on film. These zombies are ravaging, violent, and very frightening. Some are portrayed as slow but relentless, possessing little speed, reflexes, or motor skills. Instead of physical prowess, they utilize massive numbers of the undead to eventually wear down victims until they can feed.
This is not the only type of zombie you will come across. More modernly, a frightening new direction has been taken. What was once an extremely slow and stupid creature has now become an intelligent, fast, and rabid adversary. There are many common themes found in these movies. For instance, essentially all zombies must feed on human flesh. The situations that characters find themselves in typically results from some type of viral infection that has turned the majority of the world's population into ravenous monsters.
On the surface, zombie movies may seem like mindless fun and thoughtless thrills. However, if you delve beneath the surface, you can find plenty of movies with solid plots. These well-crafted films will usually exhibit great character development and interwoven plot lines. Zombie flicks also tend to tackle various social issues with a variety of subliminal themes.
As you explore this genre of film, you will find a gradual evolution from the early takes on zombies to the current ideas. Early films did not portray zombies as flesh-eating undead. Instead, they tended to be resurrected slaves that are harvested after death from the grave through various types of voodoo. Great examples can be found in "White Zombie", a 1932 film, as well as "Revenge of the Zombies" from 1943.
As the decades passed, the zombie would continue to evolve. In the 1960's a new face of the zombie genre would emerge. His name is George Romero, and he pioneered the modern idea of what a zombie is through his "Living Dead" series. His zombies would become the classic, lumbering, mindless zombies we are familiar with today. An example of this, and a cornerstone of the zombie industry, is the 1968 black and white movie "Night of the Living Dead".
Zombie movies did not stop evolving at this point. They are still changing and transforming even to this day, and most likely will continue to do so in the future. "28 Days Later", a modern film released in 2002, set a new standard for direction and execution. It was also one of the films to emphasize the quick, ruthless zombies that are becoming popular. There have also been comedic attempts at the genre that have been successful, including movies like "Shaun of the Dead" and "Zombieland".
Zombie movies are an important part of the movie industry, and a key cog in the horror genre. These types of films are constantly changing, utilizing new storytelling mechanisms and plot directions. They also attack social issues that are relevant to the time. At the end of the day, people generally watch these movies for the thrills and gory violence that no zombie movie leaves behind.
